Andrew Garfield and Elmo's Conversation About Grief Will Tug at Your Heartstrings

Andrew Garfield and Elmo are about to make you cry.

The We Live in Time actor paid a special visit to Sesame Street, where he and Elmo took a few moments to chat through their feelings on grief, something Andrew has been very open about since the death of his mother Lynn Garfield from pancreatic cancer in 2019.

"Elmo's going around Sesame Street, checking in on everybody," the Muppet began. "So Elmo wants to know how Andrew's doing."

Andrew acknowledged he was "so happy to see Elmo" before adding, "I'm just thinking about my mum today. You know, she passed away not too long ago, and I just miss her. Miss her a lot."

Elmo shared that he was so "sorry to hear that," to which Andrew replied, "It's okay. You don't have to say sorry. It's actually kind of okay to miss somebody."

"That sadness, it's kind of a gift," the 41-year-old continued. "It's kind of a lovely thing to feel, in a way, because it means you really loved somebody when you miss them."

Andrew added that when he misses his mother, he remembers all of the wonderful things about her, like the cuddles and hugs he used to get from her.

"It makes me feel close to her when I miss her in a strange way," he continued. "So I'm happy to have all the memories of my mum and the joy she brought me, and the joy she brought my brother and my dad and everyone she ever met. Everyone around her. So when I miss her, I remember it's because she made me so happy. So I can celebrate her and I can miss her at the same time."

The Amazing Spider-Man alum appeared to be holding back tears during his conversation, especially when Elmo told him, "Elmo gonna think about and celebrate your mommy, too."

The duo then shared a special moment when Andrew confessed that Elmo was always his "mummy's favorite," before Elmo encouraged Sesame Street viewers to "celebrate all the important and special people that you miss, too."

Andrew has been very candid about how he dealt with his grief following his mother's passing, especially while working on We Live in Time, which sees Andrew's Tobias fall in love with Florence Pugh's Almut, who herself is diagnosed with cancer.

"I think art heals," he recently told E! News. "And I'm in the privileged position where I have an outlet for my own healing, my own grief."

"Through art, when we are healing ourselves, we're also healing an audience," he continued. "Storytellers, we have to be wounded healers, we can't just claim to have answers. We have to be healing ourselves in order to heal others."
