Tom Holland Reveals His and Girlfriend Zendaya’s Reactions to “Excellent” Script for Spider-Man 4

The web is coming together for Spider-Man 4.

Tom Holland provided a promising update on the possibility of him starring in another Spider-Man flick, revealing that a recent draft of the film's script has him and costar Zendaya—who is also his longtime girlfriend—excited.

"We have a creative and a pitch and a draft, which is excellent — it needs work, but the writers are doing a great job," Tom said on the Oct. 17 episode of the Rich Roll Podcast. "I read it three weeks ago. And it really lit a fire in me."

"Zendaya and I sat down and read it together," he continued. "And we, at times, were like, bouncing around the living room. Like, 'This is a real movie worthy of the fans' respect.'"

The 28-year-old made sure to temper fans' expectations by maintaining that there's still work to be done before they're able to move forward with the film.

"There's a few things we need to figure out before we can get that really going, but it's exciting," he said. "And I'm really, really excited about it."

Tom and Zendaya—who met during the audition process for 2016's Spider-Man: Homecoming—have costarred in Jon Watts' trilogy of Spider-Man movies. Variety confirmed last month that Marvel alum Daniel Destin Cretton, who helmed Shang-Hai and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is in early talks to direct the next sequel.

The Cherry actor discussed how the fourth installment might fit into the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe and pointed to that being one of the biggest factors in pushing to get the film into production.

"One of the things is that, with Marvel, your film is a small cog in a large machine," he explained. "That machine has got to keep running. You have to make sure you can fit into that timeline at the right time to benefit the bigger picture."

"That’s one of the challenges we’re facing," Tom went on. "The time in which we need to get that done is a tall order but definitely achievable with the people we have working on it now."

The actor, who made his first appearance as Spider-Man in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, has been previously open about his protectiveness over the superhero franchise and his sensitivities to wanting to deliver for the fans.

"I feel very protective over Spider-Man,” he told the Critics Choice Association last November. “I feel very, very lucky that we were able to work on a franchise that got better with each movie, that got more successful with each movie, which I think is really rare, and I want to protect his legacy."

He added, "So, I won’t make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character."
