Serena Williams Details Getting Grapefruit-Sized Cyst Removed From the Side of Her Neck

Serena Williams is recovering from a recent surgery.

The 23 time Grand Slam champion revealed that she recently underwent a procedure to have a benign cyst removed from her neck.

“Back in May I found a lump showing on my neck. I immediately went to the doc got a mri and was told I have a brachial cyst,” the 43-year-old wrote under a TikTok video shared on Oct. 15. “Have you ever heard of that? They said I don’t need to get it removed if I don’t want. So I did not get it but it kept growing."

Serena, who shares daughters Olympia, 7, and Adira, 13 months, with husband Alexis Ohanian continued, “I decided to get more test and 3 test and one biopsy later everything is still negative but doctors advised I get it removed asap because it was the size of a small grapefruit and it could get infected or worse leak. So this is me removing it. I am feeling so grateful, and fortunate everything worked out, and most of all I’m healthy. I still made it to American doll with Olympia as promised. And yes all is ok.

In the video, Serena does a voiceover where she explains what is going on in the hospital room. The Wyn Beauty founder, briefly shows off her scare in her neck, and holds up the tube coming out of her neck that’s collecting fluid, while a nurse works on patching up her neck.

“Everything worked out,” she said. “And I feel really happy to have worked with some great doctors.”

The video ends with Serena leaving the doctor’s office with a hood on her head, covering up the surgery area and filming while she’s in the car “drugged up.”

Despite her procedure, Serena took Olympia for a day out.

“Alright we are at American Doll,” she said as she points the camera to her daughter. Before turning it back to herself and showing off a little bit of her post-surgery gauze and giving an update. “Mommy is suffering. But mom has to keep showing up.”

But despite keeping up with mom duties Serena did note the ways she was taking it easy, noting she ultimately had to sit out on some major events as she recovered.

“So many things I missed like @glamourmag Woman of the Year awards, @rafaelnadal retirement,” she wrote on X, formerly Twitter, TK date. “And I’m still recovering but getting better. Health always comes first.”

Serena has been candid about her past health issues. Including in 2022 when she shared she had near-death experience after welcoming Olympia, when she suffered a blood clot in her lungs that doctors and nurses almost missed.

"I spoke to the nurse," the tennis star told Elle in 2022. "I told her: ‘I need to have a CAT scan of my lungs bilaterally, and then I need to be on my heparin drip.' She said, ‘I think all this medicine is making you talk crazy.' I said, ‘No, I'm telling you what I need: I need the scan immediately. And I need it to be done with dye.'"
