Martha Stewart Shares TMI Confession About Losing Her Virginity to Her Husband at Age 19

Martha Stewart's ex-husband had all the right ingredients for lovin'. 

The media mogul confessed that she lost her virginity at age 19 to Andrew Stewart—whom she divorced in 1990 after over 25 years of marriage—and the experience was very positive.

“I had never slept with anybody before this,” Martha recalled in the Netflix documentary, Martha. “He was very aggressive, and I liked it.”

And Andrew–who shares daughter Alexis Stewart, 59, with the TV host—impressed his future wife in the beginning stages of their relationship in other ways as well. For one, Martha shared that the publisher's wealth wowed her on their first date after they were set up by one of her Barnard College classmates. 

“He picked me up in his little yellow Mercedes sedan,” Martha said. “I had never been in a Mercedes before.”

Noting that he also had an American Express credit card, which was a "very big deal at the time," the 83-year-old continued, "It was exciting to meet a sophisticated young man."

Of course, material goods weren't the only way Andrew won Martha over. Ultimately, she was drawn to his good character. As she explained, "He was very polite and handsome, and he had traveled a lot."

But while their love story started out on a high, Martha confessed to being unfaithful to Andrew at times during their marriage, admitting she had a "very brief affair" with a "very attractive Irish man" in the '60s. 

And when the couple eventually separated in 1987, the culinary icon struggled to re-find her footing. 

"Getting divorced was a terrible thing for me," she told People in a 2020 interview, "because we were the first to divorce in my family."

In fact, their breakup was so rough, Andrew—who has since remarried twice—reportedly obtained a court order forbidding Martha to speak to him, and the pair ultimately lost touch. 

"That we haven’t spoken since the divorce is even more painful," Martha continued. "But I’m very strong, and I’m very motivated to get on with life."
