Guilherme "Bomba" Vasconcelos, MMA Star Who Dated Demi Lovato, Dead at 38

The martial arts community is mourning a tragic loss.

Guilherme “Bomba” Vasconcelos, a professional fighter who previously dated Demi Lovato, has died, his loved ones confirmed to MMA Fighting. He was 38 years old.

The athlete’s uncle Walter Vasconcelos Jr. also spoke to his nephew’s passing on social media, writing on Oct. 15, via translation, “Sad, very sad to say goodbye, Guilherme Vasconcelos! And so far from us in the USA. My dear nephew, my godson, loving father of little Naomi.”

Walter continued to note how the MMA fighter’s family members mourned his loss, including Guilherme’s mother Elisabete, adding, “We were looking forward to your arrival at Christmas, which will no longer happen. Life is a breath and we wake up to this heartbreaking news. We pray for you!”

No cause of death has been shared at this time.

Guilherme—who was nicknamed “Bomba” professionally—got his start, per MMA fighting, in his home country of Brazil. Across his seven-year professional UFC and Bellator career, the athlete accumulated 10 wins before his retirement in 2019.

And while he was known within the fighting community, he became more broadly known in 2017 when he briefly dated Demi.

Following the news of his passing, a number of Guilherme’s friends and colleagues, including longtime jiu-jitsu coaches Cristiano Lazzarini and Vinicius “Draculino” Magalhaes, honored his legacy.

As Cristiano wrote on Instagram, via translation, “Of all my countless students you were the bravest I've ever had! In moments of chaos he was a machine... in trivial times he was a sweet boy... we had a trajectory that had a little bit of everything... his debut in professional MMA, with a victory, against a guy who had 10 wins in a row and had 19 fights.”

He continued, “It was one of the happiest moments of my life in sports.”

Vinicius, likewise, spoke to the jiu jitsu world champion’s fighting spirit.

“Rest in Peace, Warrior,” he wrote. “One of the bravest and most honest fighters we had on our team. My sincere condolences to the family. Today our team is in mourning.”

Vinicius’ post included a repost from Guilherme, in which the fighter previously reflected on what he learned under the instructor’s tutelage.

“Knowledge will stick with you forever and nobody can ever take it from you,” Guilherme wrote in the post. “And the knowledge you gain from training, teaching and competing is priceless! It's still one of the best things I've ever heard from someone. Since that day I live by that code.”
