Nebraska Regent Floats The Idea Of Fans Storing Their Ashes Under Team's Stadium, And Not A Terrible Idea
No one likes to think about what will happen to them when they die, but it's an inevitability. So, why not have a plan in place?
If you're a diehard (pun intended) Nebraska Cornhuskers fan, one school administrator pitched the idea of letting fans who have kicked the bucket have their ashes stored under the school's appropriately named Memorial Stadium.
The Stadium is due for some renovations and Regent Barbara Weitz floated the idea that the school could add a columbarium — a place where ashes are stored — under the field.
According to the Associated Press, the other administrators laughed at this idea, and Weitz claimed she had suggested it light-heartedly, something I don't buy for a second. I think she put it out there in all seriousness, then when people started goofing on it, she panicked and was like, "Uh… just kidding, guys; I mean, obviously, right? …We like to have fun around here."
There's no need to feel that way because I think Weitz pitched a pretty damn good idea.
She noted that the school is currently facing a $58 million budget shortfall, and Weitz even had plans for how locations for ashes could be priced according to where they're located under the field.
I mean, when you need money — especially in the NIL era — there aren't any bad ideas. In fact, not only is this not a bad idea, it's a legitimately good one.
Morbid, sure; but still good.

Letting Fans Store Their Ashes Under A Football Stadium Solves A Bunch Of Problems
"One thing I know best about Nebraska is how much the football team and the volleyball team mean," Weitz said. "We really do love our sports teams and follow them everywhere. It’s part of being a Nebraskan. So why wouldn’t being buried under the field be a great way to be close to your team forever? So it was kind of a combination of needing money, talking about ways to get it and then kind of trying to say let’s use our imaginations."
Exactly.
Everyone wants to think that when they die, their family will proudly put their ashes on the mantle. Of course, we all know that no one really wants that, and sometimes ashes end up getting passed from person to person like a recurring gag gift.
So, if you're a big Nebraska fan, it'd be cool to have your cremains (real word; look it up) under your favorite team's feet.
I would do it if my favorite college football team was offering this option.
"You mean I can be placed under the turf at UCF's FBC Mortgage Stadium and I don't have to suffer the posthumous loss of dignity that comes with my relatives trying to pawn my ashes off on each other? Where do I sign?!"
My only stipulation would be that they're not allowed to hit me up for donations while I'm still alive. I'm not saying I won't donate, just don't call me asking for money.
