Tennessee House Vote, Leaked Ukraine War Documents, Biden Transgender Proposal

TENNESSEE HOUSE VOTE

lawmakers have voted to expel two young Black Democratic House members, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, for participating in gun control protests on the House floor last week. A third Democrat, Gloria Johnson, also took part in the protests but survived the vote. According to WPLN political reporter Blaise Gainey, the two lawmakers expelled come from Democratic-leaning counties, which could mean they will be back in their seats before the end of the month. On Monday, Nashville's Metro Council will vote to seat a representative for the seat left empty by Jones, and several council members have already stated that they choose Jones.

LEAKED UKRAINE WAR PLANS

Top secret documents about the war in Ukraine have surfaced on social media. Classified documents, offering details on Ukraine's military and the state of the war, have been published on Twitter and Telegram. The Pentagon is investigating the leaks and whether the documents were altered before they were published. NPR's national security correspondent Greg Myre reported that the leaked documents include a detailed map of Ukraine, locations where troops are concentrated, and numerous charts describing the strength of troops and available weapons. Military analysts say the documents do appear to be genuine, but it also looks like they may have been altered.

BIDEN AND TRANSGENDER SPORTS

Several states have implemented bans preventing transgender students from joining school sports teams that do not align with their assigned sex at birth. The Biden administration has proposed to make these broad bans illegal, using Title IX, which prohibits sex-based discrimination in education. However, the proposed changes would still allow schools some flexibility to ban transgender athletes based on factors such as age and sport.

According to NPR's Sequoia Carrillo, the proposed change would involve adding just one sentence to the law. However, it is the first step in a lengthy process that could take several months or even years.
