Saoirse Ronan’s Brutally Honest Remark on Self-Defense Stuns Famous Men Including Denzel Washington

Saoirse Ronan isn't afraid to speak up, especially when it really matters.

During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show alongside Paul Mescal, Eddie Redmayne and Denzel Washington Oct. 25, the group was listening to Eddie discuss the self-defense training he underwent for his upcoming TV show The Day of the Jackal when the actor revealed that a combat expert taught him how to use his phone as a self-defense weapon.

"Who is actually going to think about that?" Paul, 28, interjected, mimicking reaching into his pocket to grab his phone. "If someone actually attacked me, I’m not going to go 'phone!'"

The group burst into laughter, with host Graham Norton also miming the perceived absurdity of the situation, while the Lady Bird actress attempted to get a word in.

Eddie, 42, responded to Paul's comment by calling it a "very good point" before the 30-year-old actress delivered her reality check.

"That's what girls have to think about all the time," she said as the group of men suddenly stopped laughing. She then turned to the crowd and said, "Am I right, ladies?" before they clapped in agreement.

The now-viral clip was shared to X (formerly known as Twitter) that same day with the caption "saoirse ronan gagging men we love to see it" and has since been viewed over 50 million times.

"so obsessed with her straight wiping the smiles off of their faces like this is so satisfying," one person replied, while another said, "Men will never understand how much energy women expend checking that they're safe. Well done for saying it Saoirse."

Added a third user, "this encapsulates men being ignorant of male privilege in a nutshell. the fact that these guys-- nice guys, mind-- are just so unaware is almost terrifying. thank goodness for saoirse though because we all need a bit more attention drawn to this."
