Suzanne Collins’ New Hunger Games Book Cover Revealed: All the Details Behind Sunrise on the Reaping

Suzanne Collins is adding another piece into her games.

Nearly four months after the Hunger Games novelist confirmed she was working on The Sunrise on the Reaping—another prequel installment of the popular original franchise that will tell the origin story of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark’s mentor Haymitch Abernathy—the upcoming book's cover and plot details have been revealed.

The newest novel’s cover is purple with a gold songbird and snake pointing toward each other in an open horseshoe-shaped design. Golden spikes rise behind the two creatures, seemingly symbolizing a sunrise. In a statement to Today about the newest cover unveiling, Scholastic vice president, publisher and editorial director David Levithan said, “The spiky sun rises on a symbol that will come to mean a lot to Haymitch Abernathy, as well as countless readers.”

Set to be released on March 18, 2025, the book has already revealed a quote from its narrator, Haymitch Abernathy: “They will not use my tears for their entertainment.”

Additionally, the official description for the book on sales websites gives more insight into Haymitch’s journey.

“When you’ve been set up to lose everything you love, what is there left to fight for?” The description for Sunrise on the Reaping reads. “Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves."

The 50th Quarter Quell, which Collins’ previous Hunger Games novels revealed Haymitch will win, forced double the amount of tributes into the arena. Instead of forcing one female and male tribute from each district to compete in the fight-to-the-death games, the Capitol takes two female and male tributes—one of whom, in District 12, will be Haymitch.

“When Haymitch’s name is called, he can feel all his dreams break,” the book’s official description continues. “He’s torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who’s nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town.”

No other characters in Sunrise on the Reaping have been named quite yet, but in Catching Fire, Katniss reveals that one of her mother’s friends, Maysilee Donner, was also reaped that year. At some point during the games, Haymitch and Maysilee will form an alliance, but it’s still unclear what their relationship was prior to entering the arena.

“As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he’s been set up to fail,” the description finishes. “But there’s something in him that wants to fight—and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena.”

After announcing her latest installment, which follows the original Hunger Games trilogy as well as its prequel the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes—which shared President Coriolanus Snow’s origin story—Collins noted what inspired her to write the upcoming novel.

“With Sunrise on the Reaping, I was inspired by David Hume's idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few,'" the author explained to the Associated Press. “The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question ‘Real or not real?' seems more pressing to me every day.”

And while Sunrise on the Reaping is still nearly six months away—with its film following on Nov. 20, 2026—keep reading for more beloved books getting their own film or TV adaptations.

Starring: Elle FanningMichelle Pfeiffer and Nicole Kidman

Premieres: TBD on Apple TV+
Why we’re Excited: Is it really a limited series if it doesn’t have Kidman popping up in it? Thorpe’s book—following the daughter of a former Hooters waitress and a onetime pro-wrestler who turns to OnlyFans after becoming a single mom at 20—is already excellent on its own. But this casting has certainly placed this eight-episode series at the top of the must-watch list.
